Ralston High School Theatre
For Ralston High School’s theater, I worked on many of their promotional posters. I found this to be a fun project because I got to explore multiple styles and themes with them. No one poster was similar to the other. Below is a collection of the posters I have created through working with them.
Middletown by Will Eno
A play over the exploration of life and how it is constantly taking place, day to day. Discussing The vastness of life through the lens of different citizens.
They wanted the poster to show this vastness, while keeping a focus on the story within. I used a 360 aerial photo, because I liked the way it creates a small world. The rest I mainly touched up by adding slight color and stars to the sky. I wanted to create something expansive, while keeping it grounded.
Zombie Prom by John Dempsey
An electric rock ‘n’ roll musical about forbidden love that even crosses the lines of life itself.
The musical is electric and takes place in the 50’s. I tried to capture that aesthetic through mainly my color usage and illustrative style. They wanted a zombie hand holding a rose. I illustrated the hand and rose and added a nuclear symbol in the back to give it a focal glow. The rest of the accents in the background and the font choice was to fit the 50’s style.
She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen
An adventurous tale of a girl discovering a world beyond imagination that was her sisters escape.
The Play is based on the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons. They wanted a poster that felt impactful, with a monster like a dragon or hydra as the focal antagonist. I illustrated the poster and gave it a metal rock themed grunge to it. I wanted the poster to feel like you knew She Kills Monsters.
Studio 54 (Student Directed)
This was a bit of a different project as it was a student directed night. This was the first poster where I did not have a play to go off of. They gave me the theme of “I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice cream!”
Through that, I gave it a fun bright aesthetic. It was a big night for the students who had all worked hard to put on these plays and I wanted the poster to have a similar level of that energy. The main color palette I was told to use was pink. The gold I used to have add a pop to it.
Puffs (or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic) by Matt Cox
This play is a perspective of the events in Hogwarts during the Harry Potter years, through the lens of the Hufflepuffs. It is a funny exploration of the wizarding world through a lesser known Hogwarts House.
They wanted the poster to be similar to the promotional poster for the original play. I kept a lot of the same pieces and elements but rearranged them in a way that felt new and original while also making sure that everything on the page fit nicely and legible.
The Good Doctor by Neil Simon & Anton Chekhov
A series of comical sketches narrated by the writer while is recounting some of the events through his life.
The play takes place in an older setting and they wanted a poster that reflected the time period and the over arching narrative of the play. I modified an adobe stock asset of a wood carved illustration of a man. I gave it an old paper texture and kept the rest simple.
